When our skin isn’t on its best behaviour, we definitely have our go-to tips and tricks to turn things around as quickly as possible. Sometimes, though, our skin needs more than a quick fix. A skin overhaul requires changes to more than just your skincare regime, and usually signifies that something else is out of balance across your lifestyle or dietary habits.

The good news is that the changes you need to make are small ones, but when applied consistently, yield fantastic results.

Your skin is always renewing itself, and it’s up to you to help the process of regeneration along by banishing dead skin that’s masking the fresh layer underneath. During winter months in particular, our skin is often flakey and dry and in desperate need of renewal, and that’s why exfoliating is our first port of call when it comes to reviving your skin.

There’s no shortage of DIY scrubs you can make from all natural ingredients, which are often a better alternative to the harsh ingredients and microbeads found in many exfoliating products on the market. Gently rub your choice of scrub in circular motions once or twice a week, buffing away dead skin as you go, and you’ll be on your way to the revived skin you deserve.


While we’re on the topic of changes you can make in the realm of your skincare routine, it’s time to mention the next important step in achieving a radiant complexion. Hydration!

A good buffing away of dead skin can make you feel brand new, but without following it up with a dose of moisture, you’ll quickly be back at square one. Keep your skin supple and smooth by moisturising daily, both in the morning and evening before you hit the sack.

Dietary Changes

While hydration through moisturiser is important for nurturing your skin from the outside in, the way we treat our bodies plays just as large a role in looking good from the inside out! Drinking plenty of water is an obvious tip, and one that we hear rehashed countless times by beauty experts and healthcare professionals - but with good reason. Water plumps up the skin, so without an adequate water intake, your skin will appear duller, with wrinkles and pores more prominent than usual.

The next step in the intake equation is, of course, food. We could rattle off dozens of anti-oxidant rich goodies to improve the appearance of your skin, but when it comes to skin and overall health, no amount of superfoods will counter the effects of overindulging in certain ingredients. Be mindful of refined sugar, trans fats and excessive alcohol consumption and steer towards a diet rich in vegetables and healthy fats.


Last, but absolutely not least, is the ever important and frequently neglected factor in achieving beautiful skin...sleep! All of the aforementioned tips won’t make a dent if you’re chronically sleep deprived. From a vanity perspective alone, lack of sleep is a huge no-no, and don’t get us started on the implications on your health and quality of life too. Get a healthy amount of quality shut-eye (and, no, one day of good sleep followed by a 6 of late nights doesn’t count!) as well as applying the above tips, and you’ll be on your way to skin so glowing it’ll rival the sun!
