The Ultimate Guide to Revive Your Skin

When our skin isn’t on its best behaviour, we definitely have our go-to tips and tricks to turn things around as quickly as possible. Sometimes, though, our skin needs more than a quick fix. A skin overhaul requires changes to more than just your skincare regime, and usually signifies that something else is out of balance across your lifestyle or dietary habits.

The good news is that the changes you need to make are small ones, but when applied consistently, yield fantastic results.

We’ve put together our top tips for reviving your skin from the inside out!

Your skin is always renewing itself, and it’s up to you to help the process of regeneration along by banishing dead skin that’s masking the fresh layer underneath. During winter months in particular, our skin is often flakey and dry and in desperate need of renewal, and that’s why exfoliating is our first port of call when it comes to reviving your skin.

There’s no shortage of DIY scrubs you can make from all natural ingredients, which are often a better alternative to the harsh ingredients and microbeads found in many exfoliating products on the market. Gently rub your choice of scrub in circular motions once or twice a week, buffing away dead skin as you go, and you’ll be on your way to the revived skin you deserve.

While we’re on the topic of changes you can make in the realm of your skincare routine, it’s time to mention the next important step in achieving a radiant complexion. Hydration!

A good buffing away of dead skin can make you feel brand new, but without following it up with a dose of moisture, you’ll quickly be back at square one. Keep your skin supple and smooth by moisturising daily, both in the morning and evening before you hit the sack.

Dietary Changes

While hydration through moisturiser is important for nurturing your skin from the outside in, the way we treat our bodies plays just as large a role in looking good from the inside out! Drinking plenty of water is an obvious tip, and one that we hear rehashed countless times by beauty experts and healthcare professionals - but with good reason. Water plumps up the skin, so without an adequate water intake, your skin will appear duller, with wrinkles and pores more prominent than usual.

The next step in the intake equation is, of course, food. We could rattle off dozens of anti-oxidant rich goodies to improve the appearance of your skin, but when it comes to skin and overall health, no amount of superfoods will counter the effects of overindulging in certain ingredients. Be mindful of refined sugar, trans fats and excessive alcohol consumption and steer towards a diet rich in vegetables and healthy fats.

Last, but absolutely not least, is the ever important and frequently neglected factor in achieving beautiful skin...sleep! All of the aforementioned tips won’t make a dent if you’re chronically sleep deprived. From a vanity perspective alone, lack of sleep is a huge no-no, and don’t get us started on the implications on your health and quality of life too. Get a healthy amount of quality shut-eye (and, no, one day of good sleep followed by a 6 of late nights doesn’t count!) as well as applying the above tips, and you’ll be on your way to skin so glowing it’ll rival the sun!

5 Ways to Prepare Your Skin For Summer

While it’s not officially summer yet, you’re probably already planning a sunny vacation, eyeing that dream swimsuit and fantasising about sea, sand and sangria. Your mind is totally ready for a change in weather - but is your skin?

In your eagerness to embrace all that summer has to offer, you might be inclined to rush into one big exfoliating, hair removing, moisturising frenzy!

But hold up - that’s not exactly the best course of action.

It’s important to respect the skin and ease it into the new season, so we’ve compiled a few tips to prepare your skin for its best summer yet.

After months of hibernation, you might be looking to de-fuzz your pins before exposing them to the newfound sunshine.

Regardless of which method of hair removal you favour, proper aftercare is essential. When hair is removed and follicles are exposed, they’re extra vulnerable to irritation and sensitive to heat and friction. What this means is that frolicking on sand and getting too much sun immediately after shaving or waxing is a no-no.

It’s best to avoid sun or excessive heat for 24-48 hours after hair removal, particularly if it’s been a long time since your last hair removal session!

No matter the season, exfoliation is an important part of a healthy skin routine - but in preparation for summer, you’ll want to make sure your skin is as glowing as possible.

After months spent covered in cosy layers and huddling by the heater, it’s time to give your skin a fresh start. There are countless DIY scrubs you can make from all natural ingredients, which are the gentler alternative to harsh ingredients found in many exfoliants on the market. Start from your feet and work your way up in gentle circular motions, buffing away dead skin as you go.

You can even exfoliate your lips to leave them fresh and soft for the summer months too! Our go-to method for pampering our pout is to apply a lip scrub made from our Natural Paw Paw Ointment mixed in with brown sugar, buff the lips, and wipe the scrub off. Too easy!

Summer heat might be what you’ve been dreaming of these last few months, but as with anything, it has its drawbacks. Intense heat causes moisture to be released from the skin at a high rate in order to cool the body, and this moisture loss is even more extreme if you’re active in outdoor sports. Beyond this, we tend to shower and wash our faces a lot more in the summer, which can strip the skin of its natural oils.

For this reason, it’s important to keep the skin moisturised. Moisturising is a crucial part in restoring hydration to the skin after exfoliating and hair removal in the lead up to summer, and also for maintaining soft and healthy skin throughout the season. For a formula that is whisper-light yet intensely hydrating, give our Paw Paw 95% Pure Moisturiser a go.

It’s never a good idea to intentionally expose oneself to the sun for prolonged periods of time. By now, we hope it goes without saying that applying sunscreen before exposure to sun, and reapplying often, is of the utmost importance.

Some of us are less prone to sunburn than others, but we should all incorporate after-sun care into our skincare routine. We recommend applying Aloe Vera to skin that has been exposed to the elements, especially if you’re showing signs of sunburn. Our Natralus 100% Pure Aloe Vera Gel provides an instant cooling effect, soothing damaged or irritated skin and reducing peeling through its hydrating properties.

Higher temperatures don’t just bring an increased risk of sunburn and external skin dehydration. Hotter weather and more time spent outdoors also calls for an increase in internal hydration. Drinking water is the ultimate beauty tip - you can follow all the skincare advice in the world, but without adequate hydration your skin will suffer.

So, drink up & and slip, slop, slap!

Shea Butter - The Ancient Beauty Secret

There are few ingredients as widely used and highly regarded in the beauty industry as shea butter.

First harnessed thousands of years ago, with accounts of its use dating back to Cleopatra’s Egypt, the incredible nourishing properties of shea butter have continued to make it a fixture in countless products on the market - but what exactly makes this ingredient so special and it’s prominence so enduring? Read on to find out more!

It all starts with moisture.

Shea butter is sourced from the nut of the sacred African Shea-Karite tree, where it continues to be used to protect skin from drying out from the severe winds and pounding sun of the savannah.

Shea’s mixture of oleic and stearic acid is what makes it such an effective moisturiser, even in extreme conditions, as these components are similar to those found in animal fats and are therefore absorbed easily by the skin. Due to the vitamin A and vitamin E content in shea butter, it also makes for a fantastic ingredient to nourish and moisturise the lips!

As we age, our skin loses it’s elasticity and suppleness due a loss of structural collagen that binds the skin together. In turn, this leads to fine lines and wrinkles - particularly when combined with excessive sun exposure. The good news is that shea butter makes for a fantastic anti-ageing weapon!

Studies have show that shea butter boosts collagen production by seeping deep into layers of the skin and nourishing them intensely, making skin appear smoother and firmer. It’s also non-comedogenic, which means it won’t clog pores and can be used regularly on the face. Hooray!

The fatty acids in shea butter aren’t just useful for moisturising and to stave off the signs of ageing, they also make it a wonderful natural healing ingredient. Given shea’s similarity in composition to animal fat, it’s ability to repair skin is remarkable. Used before, during and after bouts of stress on the skin, shea butter can help prevent signs of damage - making it a perfect remedy to stretch marks during pregnancy and growth spurts.

Also found in shea butter is cinnamic acid, which is hailed for its anti-inflammatory effects and therefore makes shea a wonderful remedy to inflammation.

As the shea reaches layers deep in the skin, it works rapidly to normalise the skin faster and reduce swelling. You can even apply shea-enriched moisturisers to joints and sore muscles after strenuous exercise to reduce soreness. Sounds better by the second, doesn’t it?!

The above uses and benefits of shea butter are just a few of many. That’s why we love to incorporate this incredible ingredient into many of our products here at Natralus.

You can benefit from the healing and nourishing properties of shea butter by incorporating it into your daily skincare routine. Our range of shea-enriched products include:

7 Natural Skincare Hacks

From genetics and diet to environment and stress levels, there are many factors that determine the fate of our skin.

Before you rush to book in expensive and time consuming facials and skin treatments, get to know a few handy tips that will see you on your way to healthier, more radiant skin – without breaking the bank!

Without further ado, here are our 7 favourite skincare hacks.

1. Best foot forward

Warmer weather has arrived and it’s time to ditch the winter boots for spring sandals! Chances are that your feet are in dire need of some TLC after the colder months. A super simple hack for readying your feet for exposure to the world is to apply Natralus Natural Paw Paw Ointment before bed and wear clean cotton socks overnight. Come morning time, you’ll notice a huge improvement.

2. Yoga for youthfulness

Skincare can encompass much more than simply what you put on your skin. Your outer glow is often directly impacted by what’s happening inside, with circulation and blood flow playing a large role in the appearance of your skin.

Many forms of exercise improve circulation, but yoga enthusiasts thank their practice for releasing toxins and easing overworked muscles that might be causing fine lines and poor blood flow. Take a few minutes a day to practice some yoga positions, focusing on inverted poses such as downward dog. Namaste!

3. De-puff

If you’re already not a morning person, waking up with puffiness around the eyes will not help your cause. While the classic spoons-in-the-freezer trick can work, it’s pretty uncomfortable to whack icy cold metal on your face first thing in the morning.

Instead, try cutting up some cool cucumber and spend a few minutes with the slices over your eyes. Alternatively, tea bags work wonders when applied to the under eye area, as the caffeine constricts blood vessels and decreases puffiness.

4. Good morning, good skin.

Good skin starts from the inside, and hydration is the most important factor of all. As well as ensuring you’re staying hydrated throughout the day, try squeezing fresh lemon into a mug of hot water and drinking this first thing in the morning. This will assist in purifying the body and can potentially reduce toxins that lead to bad skin.

5. Redness, get oat!

Due to its anti-inflammatory properties, oatmeal is gaining popularity as more than just a tasty breakfast option. Its soothing qualities also make it a great natural remedy for more serious skin conditions such as eczema.

A facemask is one of the best ways to reap the benefits of oatmeal, and it’s as simple as combining equal parts oatmeal and hot water. Add in a dollop of honey and plain yoghurt for extra skin soothing benefits!

6. Lip revival

If winter has wreaked havoc on your lips, this DIY natural lip exfoliator will have your pout feeling brand new. Simply combine 1 teaspoon of Natralus Natural Paw Paw Ointment with ½ a teaspoon of a natural exfoliator such as a sugar or ground coffee. Once mixed, use your finger to apply a small amount to your lips and gently massage in circular motions. After this process, wipe off any excess mixture with a damp towel and say goodbye to dead skin cells!

7. Clean up your act

Rubbing our eyes or absentmindedly touching our face throughout the day seems harmless enough, doesn’t it? However, even if you diligently wash your hands after every bathroom break, your mitts are still going to accumulate their fair share of bacteria throughout the day!

When you touch your face, you’re spreading bacteria to your skin, which can trigger breakouts. If you find it impossible not to lean into your hands when seated at a desk or stroke your chin while deep in thought, invest in a pocket sized hand sanitiser to regularly disinfect your hands instead.

Spring Cleaning - Our Top Tips

Spring has officially sprung! With the new season upon us, we’re embracing renewal and rebirth – and what better way to kick things off than with a Spring-clean?

Whether you’re rearranging your wardrobe, getting rid of unwanted household items or tackling more hands-on cleaning tasks – now is the time to de-clutter and reset for the coming months. We’ve compiled some of our top tips for making the most of your Spring-cleaning.

Don’t dread it!

When the sun is shining, chores don’t seem quite as arduous as they might have during the winter months. However, no amount of sunshine can make the thought of cleaning appealing to some of us.

If you’re prone to procrastination, try to make your spring-cleaning sessions as enjoyable as possible. Find your perfect playlist or podcast, or just tune in to your favourite radio station.  Better yet, listen to an audiobook – you’ll end up feeling all the more accomplished if you’ve learned something new AND kicked all your cleaning goals!

Out with the old.

The words ‘spring-clean’ might inspire fear in the hoarders amongst us, but sometimes it’s important to let go. Clutter can impact everything from your sleeping patterns to anxiety levels, so take this time to be honest with yourself about what you do and don’t need.

It might feel like a big deal to part ways with a jumper that has sat loyally folded on a shelf in your wardrobe, but it’ll feel incredible when you’re no longer inundated with belongings you don’t need. Donate clothing, shoes, accessories and even books and furniture to your nearest charity store. A possession you’ve tired of might be exactly what someone else is longing for.

Make-up revival

While you might regularly purchase new additions for your make-up bag, when was the last time you disposed of products?  Un-opened and well-formulated cosmetics can stay fresh for quite some time, but when products are opened and exposed to air, bacteria can form and ingredients eventually degrade.

When sorting through your cosmetics, a good starting point is mascara and liquid eyeliners, as the preservatives in these products start to break down around the 3 months mark, leaving you susceptible to eye infections. After this, tackle any liquid base products that have been lurking around for too long  - and definitely dispose of anything that has drastically changed in smell, colour or consistency.

When taking on grittier tasks such as cleaning windows, scrubbing the shower and even gardening, it’s important to protect your hands from the harsh chemicals found in most cleaning products. Even natural cleaning solutions can wreak havoc on delicate skin and cause irritation and dryness.

Our NatraPower HandShield Liquid Gloves creates an invisible barrier that will moisturise and nourish your skin while locking out external irritants such as detergents, solvents, caustic cleaners and bleach.

“Your mind is a garden, your thoughts are the seeds.”

With all this emphasis on re-birth and reinvention, the most important place to begin is inwardly. If you’re hanging on to some winter blues or are simply in need of a mood booster, this is an opportune time to set new goals for yourself and nurture your mind-garden. Remember – take some time to smell the roses!

Now it’s time to roll up your sleeves and get to work!

After hours and hours of travelling, keeping your hair and makeup looking fresh and fabulous is no easy feat – but there’s no reason you can’t satisfy your wanderlust and keep a beauty routine in check. Whether you’re jet setting half way across the world, or taking a short weekend away, these beauty tips will make sure you feel refreshed when you reach your destination.

Combat de-hydration

Travelling can significantly affect your skin’s hydration, especially during air-travel. To combat this situation, ensure that you regularly apply a light-weight moisturiser such as our Natralus Paw Paw 95% Pure Moisturiser to maintain your skins hydration. The last thing you want to be is sitting in your chair on flight feeling tacky and oily from a heavy moisturiser.

Take moist wipes

Moist wipes can be the perfect way to freshen up after a full day of exploring. A quick cleanse of your hands, face and neck and you’ll be feeling refreshed and ready to take on the rest of the day.

Keep hand sanitiser – on hand

Francesca Fusco, M.D. a NYC based dermatologist says, “You can pick up any number of unknown bacteria that can result in any number of skin problems after your arrive”. She advises to resist the temptation to touch your skin (especially your face) while you travel to avoid spreading bacteria and increasing your risk of breakouts.

Hand sanitiser is not only a great way to avoid a mid-trip breakout, but also a great precautionary measure to avoid getting sick on your holiday. Try our NatraSan Antibacterial Instant Hand Sanitiser! It will leave your hands feeling ultra soft and hygienically chean and comes in handy, 28mL spray bottles, perfect for your handbag!

Keep your lips nourished and soft

Whilst travelling, your face and body are easily exposed to the elements. Your lips can be the first to show the signs of de-hydration, wind burn and sun exposure. In order to prevent this unpleasant situation, keep them nourished with a natural and moisturising lip balm. Our Natralus Natural Paw Paw Lip Butters and Natural Paw Paw Lip Balm are a great addition to your carry-on luggage.

Don’t forget to slip, slop, slap!

Whether you’re travelling to the snow capped mountains of the Swiss Alps, or to the sunny beaches of Eastern Europe, don’t forget to slip slop slap! To ensure your skin is always protected, ensure that you use an SPF50+ sunscreen as well as an SPF foundation.. This will ensure your skin stays shielded from those harsh UV rays.

Calm your sun kissed skin with soothing Aloe Vera!

If you find yourself spending too much time soaking in the suns rays, keep a small tube of Aloe Vera on hand. This will help to soothe your skin and promote healing. Try our Natralus 100% Pure Aloe Vera Gels and Sprays - the perfect addition to your travel essentials.

Go small…

If you can, purchase your essential products in travel size. This will allow you to save luggage space, meaning more room for new holiday purchases. Thankfully, our Natralus skin care products come in convenient travel sizes, making them a wonderful addition to your suitcase.

Surprising Beauty Benefits of Paw Paw

Other than its great taste, Paw Paw (Papaya) fruit is well renowned for its moisturising and soothing properties; ensuring your skin stays hydrated and smooth. You may ask yourself how this strange looking fruit can be such an amazing ingredient for promoting your skins health? Well, the answer lies in its assortment of rich antioxidants and nutrients, truly making it nature’s wonder fruit!

Packed full of vitamins and minerals

Paw Paw (as the active ingredient in many of our Natralus skincare products) is an excellent way to supply your skin with a whole list of enzymes, vitamins and minerals. Paw Paw hosts more Vitamin C than oranges, more Vitamin A than carrots and a large amount of Vitamin B and Vitamin E. These vitamins form a barrier and boost your body’s ability to protect your skin from harmful free radicals, believed to be one of the main causes of wrinkles and age spots.

Provides exceptional hydration

Paw Paw is also naturally high in sugar, meaning that it’s able to attract, absorb and retain water, providing exceptional hydration for your skin.

A gentle exfoliator

One of Paw Paw’s enzymes Papain, creates a gentle exfoliating action that helps to dissolve the layer of skin that binds dry, dead skin cells together. What does this mean for you? No more cracked, scaly and dry skin! This exfoliating action also helps with your cell regeneration, leaving your skin noticeably fresher and brighter.

Anti-inflammatory and anti-aging benefits

Great news! Paw Paw has a whole host of anti-inflammatory and anti-aging properties helping to reduce skin irritation and aging. When applied to your skin, these amazing properties can aid with repairing, tightening and calming your skin.

Relief from skin conditions and sensitivity

If you have sensitive skin or suffer from certain skin conditions such as, psoriasis or eczema, Paw Paw can provide temporary relief by softening and soothing your skin.

Healing properties

Paw Paw has had extensive studies regarding its healing benefits. The same enzyme that aids in hydration and exfoliation also helps with healing wounds. It keeps the area sterile, prevents infection and scaring whilst promoting a speedy recovery.

By now it should be clear that Paw Paw is more than just an exotic fruit but rather a remarkable super food. That’s why here at Natralus we love to incorporate Paw Paw as the active ingredient in many of our products. The great news is that you too can benefit from Paw Paw’s incredible properties by introducing it into your daily skincare routine. Our range of natural Paw Paw products include:
