The good news is, in the modern world, there’s always an option close by. However, if you use the first product that you find, you may be doing more harm than good.
Why Aluminium in Odour Management Is a Bad Thing
At Natralus, we’ve been fighting the need to fill cosmetic products with unnecessary chemicals and fillers for years. When it comes to our new natural deodorant brand, we’ve continued to adhere to these standards by avoiding harsh ingredients like parabens, talc, and triclosan.
There’s another ingredient that we’ve left out that tends to get the most attention — aluminium. With so much buzz surrounding the inclusion of aluminium in cosmetics, it begs the question, why is aluminium included so often and how is it dangerous?
The Difference Between Deodorants and Antiperspirants
The first thing that needs to be clarified is the fact that aluminium is usually included in antiperspirants, not normally found in deodorants. While the former actively fights the natural ability for the body to sweat, deodorants simply manage the scent of that sweat by making it smell better.
This is important to point out, as antiperspirants actively combat a natural bodily function. In contrast, deodorants are still deodorising without changing the natural activity of the body. Deodorants wouldn’t normally include aluminium, but even so, many are still not all that natural or effective, either.
What Does Aluminium Do in Antiperspirant?
When you apply an antiperspirant, it contains aluminium salts that clog up the pores in your skin. This has led to a back-and-forth debate over whether this “blocking up” stops your body from expelling potentially cancerous toxins.
While more research is needed, studies have indicated that those with breast cancer used antiperspirants more often. In addition, too much aluminium exposure could negatively impact how your body both responds to and makes estrogen. Other studies have also shown a possible connection between aluminum and Alzheimer’s disease.
Now, we should reiterate that many of these studies are early in the research process, and a definitive connection between aluminium and things like cancer has not yet been made. Nevertheless, there is an abundance of research that warrants caution when it comes to using a stronger ingredient like aluminium to stop the body from sweating.
